Versailles Tree Commission Announces Annual Tree Lottery Program
02/25/2019 - 10:19am

The Versailles Shade Tree Commission has announced the Village will be accepting application request forms from eligible property owners for a chance at being randomly selected to receive one of the trees that will be given away by the Shade Tree Commission as part of its annual Tree Lottery program.  Property owners who received a tree through the 2018 Tree Lottery will not be eligible for the 2019 Tree Lottery.

The tree lottery trees are not limited to being planted within the public right-of-way.  A property owner may opt to have the lottery tree planted upon their property outside the public right-of-way.  All tree planting locations must be approved by the Village Shade Tree Commission.

Eligibility to participate in the lottery process is subject to certain criteria.  Only owners of property located within the corporation limits will be eligible to participate in the lottery program.  Tenants are ineligible to participate.  If you own property within the Village and reside outside the Village, you are eligible to participate.  Property owners with nonexistent or deteriorated sidewalks (as defined in the Sidewalk Installation/Replacement Ordinance) will be eligible to participate in the lottery program, but only will be permitted to have a lottery tree planted upon their property outside the street right-of-way.

Additional criteria includes property owners who fail to properly maintain either a replacement tree or lottery tree will not be eligible to participate in future lotteries; property owners will not be eligible to receive a tree through the lottery process in two consecutive years; property owners along a street that has been outlined in the Village’s Five Year Capital Improvements Plan for reconstruction will be eligible to receive a tree through the lottery process, but will only be permitted to have the lottery tree planted upon their property outside the street right-of-way; all lottery trees are subject to the Village’s tree planting restrictions and will require a planting  permit (there is no charge for the permit); and all decisions made by the Tree Commission are final.

Individuals interested in participating in the Tree Lottery program may obtain a form by stopping by the Administrative Office Building where they will be made available.  Forms can also be accessed online and printed from the Village’s website www.versaillesohio.cc under the Forms/Other Info/Trees section.  All forms for the year’s upcoming lottery are to be returned to the Village Offices by Monday, April 1st.  If anyone has questions regarding the Tree Lottery program, please contact the Village Offices at 526-3294, ext. 206.

Mayor Subler, Village Council, and the Tree Commission are pleased to be able to provide this annual Tree Lottery program for the Village of Versailles. The Village’s tree program plays a vital role in preserving, protecting, and adding to the local urban forestry population. With continued community support the citizens of Versailles will be able to preserve and enhance the presence and value of one of our environment’s precious natural resources . . . Trees!

Property Owner Winter Sidewalk Maintenance Responsibility
01/23/2019 - 3:39pm

With the recent heavy snowfall amounts, it is important to point out each property owner, residential or business, within the Village is responsible to clear all sidewalks on their property of snow within 12 hours after any snowfall. Not only is keeping sidewalks clear for pedestrians the responsible thing to do, it’s the law. The Ohio Municipal Code, Section 660.05 states, No owner or occupant of lots or lands abutting any sidewalk, curb or gutter shall fail to keep the sidewalks, curbs and gutters in repair and free from snow, ice or any nuisance, and to remove from the sidewalks, curbs or gutters all snow and ice accumulated thereon within a reasonable time, which will ordinarily not exceed 12 hours after any storm during which the snow and ice has accumulated.

If you are a property owner and you are away from home or your business when snowfall occurs, it is still your responsibility to coordinate having someone clear your sidewalk of snow within the 12-hour period. Forcing pedestrians, especially students walking to school, to walk through snow, or out in the street, is irresponsible. Please do your part and clear your sidewalks as soon as possible after a snowfall occurs.

Snow Removal Guidelines
01/09/2019 - 8:21am

The Village of Versailles Street Department works hard to maintain safe driving conditions during a winter snow storm.  Here are some helpful guidelines for residents in case of snow accumulation:

· At the onset of a snowstorm, salt is applied to streets to prevent icing.

· Once plowing of snow has begun, several passes will be made on each street to provide curb to curb clearing.

· Depending on the duration of a storm and the amount of snow fall, it may be necessary to repeat the plowing process several times.

· When a snowfall stops, it takes the Village of Versailles Street Department approximately 4 - 6 hours to complete the snow-removal process town-wide.

· DO NOT PARK CARS ON THE STREET (if at all possible during an event). This impedes the snow removal process and causes vehicles to be plowed in.

· Shovel snow to the right side of your driveway (facing the street) to minimize the amount of snow entering your driveway as plows pass.

· Shovel and/or blow snow onto the curb, not into the street.

When a snow removal operation is underway, The Village of Versailles Street Department works around the clock to provide the best possible service to the residents of the Village. Your assistance during these type of snow events is very much appreciated.
